Tips on Time Management for Collegiate Student-Athletes

Have a planner. Using a planner is an excellent way to keep track of daily, weekly and monthly activities. Especially during season when you are constantly on the move. Put all important dates and activities in the planner and color code for maximum organization.

• Plan ahead, stay ahead. Planning ahead makes you feel more organized and takes the stress off your back when you know what to expect. Stay ahead on all class work; don't wait until the due date to do an assignment. Don't wait until finals week to stay up all night and study for the exam, study all material once you receive it.

• Start strong, finish stronger. Don't be okay with doing mediocre at the beginning with the idea of doing better at the end. Do your best the whole time and give it everything you've got at the end.

• Make daily checklists. Writing out what activities need to get accomplished for the day is a way to motivate you. When making a checklist put everything in chronological order and cross them out as they are completed.

• Use your free time wisely. Student-athletes get very little free time but in the event of having free time, do something productive, no matter how bad you want to take a nap. If you are ahead on your schoolwork, do something to get better at your sport. This is probably the most difficult task as a student athlete. Even doing something as little as stretching is beneficial.

• Make time for important things. If it is important to you, make time to do it. There is no excuse for not getting important things done. Prioritizing is the key to time management.

• Your body is a machine. Make sure you are putting healthy things into your body. Your body is a machine that you fuel with whatever you choose, make sure you're fueling your body properly to ensure maximum performance in all areas. With such a busy schedule, finding time to eat seems impossible but make sure you eat breakfast every morning and properly prepare your meals for the rest of the day. Every body is different so find a routine that works for you and stick to it.

• Sleep is important. As an athlete, letting your body get the proper amount of sleep is crucial to performing in your sport. Eight hours of sleep is ideal but AT LEAST 6 hours of sleep each night is needed to give your body a break. You have to plan your day properly to allow for enough sleep throughout the night.
